Moving with Pets: How to Make a Smooth Transition for your Furry Friends

Preparing for a move is both difficult and stressful as you make sure everything is packed and you make arrangements for your future home. Moving with pets adds a new element into the mix and requires some forethought to make sure your pet is prepared, making the transition as smooth as possible.

Here are 8 tips on how to move with pets to keep things as simple as possible.

1. Talk to your Vet

Prior to your move, talk to your vet and let them know you’ll be relocating. Make sure you get copies of any records or prescriptions for your pet so your new vet can get a better idea of your pet’s history. Take this opportunity to ask for a recommendation for a vet in your new area if you haven’t found one already.

2. Get Them Acclimated

Help your pet acclimate to their cage or crate by warming them up to it over time leading up to the move. Give them treats while in there to help them make a positive association with the crate and consider taking them for a drive so they get used to traveling.

3. Get Them Proper ID

Make sure your pets have proper tags or a microchip in the event that they get loose during travel.

4. Transport Them in Your Car

Do your best to make room in your own personal vehicle to transport your pets since traveling in a familiar setting will help keep them more at ease. Keep your dog or cat securely in their kennel or cage until you’re safely in your new home (use a leash when you let them out for pit stops) to lessen the chance of losing them in an unfamiliar environment.

5. Pet Proof Your New Home

If possible, take the time to pet proof your new home before moving day so you can rest easy your pet will be safe when you arrive. Get rid of poisonous plants and harmful pest control traps, straighten up any loose wires, and make sure windows are securely screened.

6. Keep Them Comfortable

On moving day, consider leaving your pet at a kennel or with a friend to keep them away from the chaos of loading up your belongings. If leaving them elsewhere isn’t possible, keep your pet safe in a bedroom with the door closed or another quiet place in your house.

7. Pack an Overnight Bag

Do your best to maintain a normal routine, especially for your dogs. Pack an overnight bag with extra toys, food, tools for grooming—anything that will help your pet feel more comfortable.

8. Pet-Friendly Accommodations

Check your travel route for pet-friendly hotels and accommodations if your trip will take you more than just one day to complete. Planning ahead will alleviate the stress of trying to find a place to stay after a long day on the road.
